Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman’s groundbreaking international bestseller, has transformed the way the world educates children, relates to family and friends and does business. The Harvard Business Review called emotional intelligence (EI) “a revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea” — the kind of idea that does not just advance the conversation, but permanently alters it.” Since its release, Emotional Intelligence has been a runaway success, achieving bestseller status in the U.S., Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. It has been translated into 30 languages, with over 5 million copies in print. While Dr. Goleman does not discount the importance of IQ, he believes it is not the sole measure of one’s intelligence and potential. According to Goleman, EI — which involves self-awareness, emotional balance, motivation, empathy and social finesse — is a critical indicator of success in life. Although shaped by childhood experience, EI can be improved and developed by learning throughout life. With his New York Times bestseller, Working With Emotional Intelligence, Goleman placed EI directly in the workplace, clearly outlining its vast importance in achieving success in any professional setting. He then wrote the article “What Makes a Leader?” the most requested reprint in the history of the Harvard Business Review. Dr. Goleman also is co-author of the 2002 release Primal Leadership: Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence — a Wall Street Journal, Business Week and New York Times business bestseller. Co-written with Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee, Primal Leadership unveils new scientific evidence demonstrating that a leader’s emotional competencies have an enormous impact on group performance and an organization’s bottom line. In 2002 Dr. Goleman was named one of the top 10 “business intellectuals” by the Accenture Institute for Strategic Change, which ranked the most influential thinkers and writers on business management topics. In his latest book, Destructive Emotions: How Can We Overcome Them? (Jan. 2003), Goleman provides illuminating commentary on a historic meeting between the Dalai Lama and a group of world-class scientists and philosophers. He is currently working on a new Harvard Business Review article (co-written with Warren Bennis) on creating an organizational culture that fosters candor and trust. Dr. Goleman reported on the brain and
behavioral science for The New York Times for 12 years and was awarded
the American Psychological Association’s Lifetime Achievement
Award. His other books include The Meditative Mind, The Creative Spirit
and Vital Lies, Simple Truths.
Dr. Richard E. Boyatzis His latest book, Primal Leadership: Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence (A Wall Street Journal, Business Week and New York Times business bestseller), unveils new scientific evidence demonstrating that a leader’s emotional competencies and mood have an enormous impact on group performance and an organization’s bottom line. Daniel Goleman, author of the bestseller Emotional Intelligence
and co-author of Primal Leadership, credits Dr. Boyatzis as a major
influence in the development of his groundbreaking work. He writes that
Boyatzis’ books, The Competent Manager and Innovations in Professional
Education, are “classic statements of the importance Boyatzis consults internationally and leads a landmark course for the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University that has reinvented business education. Stressing “emotional competencies” as a way to succeed in any job, Boyatzis teaches how to develop and foster good leadership skills. Enormously influential, Professor Boyatzis’ work has had an impact on the management of human resources around the world and has helped spawn a whole new industry of competency consultants, researchers and academics. Boyatzis was President and CEO of McBer & Co., an organizational and management consulting firm. From 1976 to 1987, he directed consultations to Fortune 500 companies, including Mobil, IBM, ENI Spa, Mattel and 20th Century Fox, in such areas as executive development, culture change, R&D and productivity. He holds a B.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard. He has written many articles on motivation, selfdirected behavioral change and leadership. Boyatzis followed the release of Primal Leadership with a Harvard Business Review article, Reawakening Your Passion for Work (May 2002). His next book, written with Annie McKee, is a follow-up to Primal Leadership and will be published in spring 2005. Boyatzis describes his work as an exploration of “how and why people change. It is a way of thinking about your talent, what you are, and what you want to do with it. My hope is that we can rediscover the power of the human spirit.”

Dr. Danah Zohar
For the better part of a century, IQ has been the benchmark for measuring intelligence. In the past decade, neuroscientists and psychologists illustrated that emotional intelligence (EQ) is a prerequisite for the most effective use of IQ. Danah Zohar presents stunning scientific evidence of the existence of spiritual intelligence (SQ): a spiritual center in the human brain that integrates IQ and EQ in an entirely new paradigm of human thought. Spiritual Intelligence is the ultimate intelligence of the leader. In her book, SQ: Connecting with our Spiritual Intelligence (co-authored with Dr. Ian Marshall), Zohar explains that SQ is what makes us uniquely human. It is the intelligence that allows us to see the broader pictures, to ask new questions, to defy boundaries; hence, it is at the heart of innovation and creative leadership. SQ also gives us our integrity, morality and sense of ethics. It is the difference between being a manager and a leader. In 2004 Zohar will release her new book, Spiritual Capital: Outgrowing the Crises of Capitalism. In it she explains how we can use SQ to bring about a transformation in corporate culture — from one based on short-term self-interest and profit maximization to a value-based business environment in which wealth is accumulated to generate a decent profit and raise the common good of society now and in the future. In her bestsellers, The Quantum Self and The Quantum Society, she extended the principles of quantum physics into a new understanding of human consciousness, psychology and social organization. In ReWiring the Corporate Brain (voted #1 book of the year by Management General), she asserts that while companies talk about making changes, they risk failure if they do not alter their organizations at the fundamental levels: emotional and spiritual. Zohar teaches organizations and executives how 20th century science can transform how they think and lead. She helps managers and professionals at such global corporations as Shell, Nokia, Volvo and Motorola understand how new ways of thinking can influence decision making within their organizations. She also gives HR managers and consultants a better understanding of human potential. Zohar has lectured extensively throughout the world, including at UNESCO and the World Economic Forum. She holds a BS in Physics and Philosophy from MIT and did postgraduate work at Harvard in Religion, Philosophy and Psychology. She is a Visiting Fellow at the Cranfield School of Management and teaches in the Strategic Leadership Program at Oxford. Click here for more on Book reviews and Audience comments
